Extending instead of cutting

Every crop is a subtraction. When a photograph is the wrong shape for where it has to go, the ordinary options are to lose part of the image or to letterbox it with empty bars. Outpainting adds a third: keep everything and manufacture the rest. A portrait-orientation photograph can become a wide header, a tightly framed subject can gain the breathing room the composition wanted, and a scan with a missing corner can be completed.

How the model decides what goes there

The new region is generated conditioned on the pixels adjacent to it, so continuity of texture, lighting direction and perspective is inherited from what already exists. A prompt can steer it, but the strongest signal is always the existing image — outpainting a sunset does not produce midday light no matter what you type, because the border it is matching is orange.

Work outward in steps, not in one leap

The reliable technique is incremental. Extending by a modest margin, accepting the result, and extending again from the new edge produces far better output than asking for a large extension in one pass, because each step has a rich border to reason from. A single enormous extension gives the model a thin strip of context and a vast emptiness, and it fills the emptiness with drift.

Where it fails, and how to see it coming

Structure with rules is where it breaks. Architecture gains windows that do not line up, tiled floors lose their vanishing point, and text or repeating patterns at the border continue into confident nonsense. Faces and bodies partially cut by the original frame are the worst case — an arm entering the frame will often acquire an anatomically impossible continuation. Natural, irregular content such as foliage, sky, water and fabric extends almost invisibly.

The honest limit

Nothing outside the original frame is a record of anything. Outpainting invents, and the invented region is a plausible fiction rather than a recovery of what was actually there. That is fine for a banner and unacceptable for a photograph presented as documentary evidence, a news image, or anything on an identity document — a distinction worth keeping firmly in view.
