Resizing and compressing are routinely confused and they solve different problems. Resizing changes the pixel dimensions: a 4000px-wide photograph becomes 1200px wide, and the file gets smaller because there are genuinely fewer pixels to store. Compressing keeps the dimensions and discards image information instead, trading visible quality for bytes. For a web page you almost always want to resize first and compress second — compressing a 4000px image to hit a size target destroys far more quality than resizing it would have.
Two rules keep resized images sharp. Never enlarge past the original dimensions with a resizer — that is upscaling, and interpolation will only spread the detail you have more thinly. And resize from the original file rather than from a copy that has already been resized once: every re-encode compounds the softness of the one before it, which is why an image passed through three tools looks worse than the same reduction done once.

How resizing actually works
What happens to pixels when you resize an image
Reducing an image throws pixels away and asks an algorithm which of the remaining ones should represent the discarded neighbours. Done once from a large original, the result is clean and often sharper than the source, because downsampling averages away sensor noise along with everything else.
Done repeatedly it compounds. Every pass re-samples an already re-sampled image, and the softness accumulates in a way no amount of later sharpening recovers. That is why the rule is always to resize from the largest original you have rather than from a copy.

Three ways to size an image
Resize by pixels, by percentage, or to a target
When a destination names a number
Marketplaces, print services and ad platforms specify exact pixel dimensions, and anything that misses gets rejected or silently re-compressed by their own pipeline — which is always worse than doing it yourself.
Enter the number they published and lock the aspect ratio so the other dimension follows. If their ratio differs from yours, crop first and resize second, or you will distort the subject.
- Lock the ratio unless you deliberately want distortion.
- Crop to the destination ratio before resizing to its pixel size.
- Check whether their limit is dimensions, file size, or both.

When you just need it smaller
Percentage is the right control when no destination is dictating terms — halving a photograph is a single decision and preserves the ratio automatically.
Fifty percent is the safest reduction because it maps four source pixels to one, which is arithmetically clean. Odd fractions require interpolation across pixel boundaries and lose slightly more edge detail.
- 50% and 25% resample more cleanly than arbitrary percentages.
- One large reduction beats several small ones.
- Below about 25% of the original, detail stops surviving.

When the limit is megabytes, not pixels
Email attachments, forum uploads and some CMS platforms cap file size rather than dimensions. The instinct is to compress harder, but that is usually the wrong lever.
Resizing removes pixels, which removes data proportionally and predictably. Compression removes quality unpredictably, and past a point it produces the blocky artefacts everyone recognises. Resize until you are close, then compress the remainder.
- Resize to approach the target, compress for the last stretch.
- A 4000px photo at heavy compression looks worse than a 1600px one at light compression.
- Convert to WebP if the destination accepts it — same quality, smaller file.

Keep screenshots at their native size where possible — text inside them stops being legible almost immediately under reduction, far sooner than photographic detail does.

Export from the original each time rather than resizing your resized copy. Each platform has its own ratio, and chaining reductions compounds softness.
An image that must not be cropped
Lock the aspect ratio and accept letterboxing at the destination, or pad the canvas to the target ratio. Distorting to fit is always more visible than empty space.
Batch resizing a folder
The browser tool handles one file at a time by design, because a batch of large images would exhaust device memory. Batch work belongs server-side.
Making an image larger
